Salt Lake County · Wasatch Front · 84047, 84070
A central Salt Lake Valley city defined by transit access, the Bingham Junction redevelopment, and a historic Main Street — one of the most logistically connected, fastest-evolving small cities on the entire Wasatch Front.
Midvale sits in the central Salt Lake Valley, bordered by Murray to the north, Sandy to the south, Cottonwood Heights and Holladay to the east, and West Jordan to the west. Founded in the 1850s and originally known as Bingham Junction for its role as a railroad hub serving the mines of Bingham Canyon, Midvale was a smelting and railroad town through the late 19th and early 20th centuries before transitioning into a residential and commercial community as the mines and smelters wound down. The city’s deep transit roots have proved its long-term advantage: today Midvale is one of the most transit-connected cities on the Wasatch Front, with both Trax light rail and FrontRunner commuter rail running through it — and Bingham Junction itself has been transformed into one of the most active transit-oriented redevelopment districts in Utah.
The Midvale real estate market reflects that mix of established and rapidly evolving. Established neighborhoods around historic Main Street and the Union Park area offer affordable mid-century and post-war family homes — some of the most accessible price points in central Salt Lake County. The Fort Union and east-side neighborhoods toward Cottonwood Heights provide slightly higher values with proximity to the canyons. But the real story is Bingham Junction: the former industrial brownfield on the city’s western flank has been transformed into a master-planned mixed-use community of condos, townhomes, single-family homes, and retail centered on the Bingham Junction Trax station. Combined with the long-running Jordan Bluffs development along the Jordan River, Midvale has added thousands of housing units in the past decade and continues to be one of the more accessible entry points into central Salt Lake County for first-time buyers and investors.
Beyond housing, Midvale’s commercial profile is anchored by major regional retail and an evolving downtown. Fort Union Boulevard remains one of the busiest commercial corridors in the valley. Bingham Junction has added significant retail and office space alongside its housing. The historic Main Street commercial district, which had declined for decades, has seen real revitalization with new restaurants, breweries, and locally-owned businesses bringing the original 1900s building stock back to life. For employers and commuters, Midvale’s I-15, I-215, and Bangerter Highway access combined with two transit modes make it one of the easiest-to-reach cities in the entire metro. Schools fall under the Canyons School District. With ongoing redevelopment, transit-oriented growth, and central-valley positioning, Midvale is one of the most logistically and economically advantaged cities on the Wasatch Front.
