Sandy sits in the southeast Salt Lake Valley, tucked between the Wasatch Mountains to the east and I-15 to the west. Founded in 1871 as a mining and railroad town serving the mineral wealth coming down from Little Cottonwood Canyon, it grew slowly through the 20th century before exploding into one of Utah’s largest cities during the suburban boom of the 1970s and 80s. Today Sandy is the sixth-largest city in the state, with a population near 96,000 and one of the most desirable combinations of school quality, mountain access, and commercial amenities on the entire Wasatch Front.
