The geographic center of the Salt Lake Valley — one of Utah’s oldest second-class cities, a major medical and commercial hub, and a community that’s preserved its small-city character through a century of change.
Murray sits at the geographic center of the Salt Lake Valley, bordered by Salt Lake City to the north, Cottonwood Heights and Holladay to the east, Midvale to the south, and Taylorsville to the west. Founded in the 1840s and incorporated in 1903, Murray is one of Utah’s oldest second-class cities and was originally a smelting and railroad town — the massive ASARCO smelter shaped the city’s economy and skyline for nearly a century before its closure in the 2000s reshaped the city’s western flank into the rapidly developing Bingham Junction transit-oriented neighborhood. Today Murray balances its preserved historic core, its central-valley convenience, and its evolving redevelopment areas in a way few mid-sized Utah cities have managed.
The Murray real estate market reflects all of that history. Established neighborhoods around 5300 South and Murray Park offer some of the best mid-century and post-war family homes in the valley — mature trees, walkability to schools, and central-valley access to everywhere. The Murray east-side toward Vine Street and Big Cottonwood Creek provides larger lots and access to the Murray Parkway Trail. Bingham Junction along the city’s western edge has transformed from industrial brownfield into one of the most active master-planned mixed-use developments on the Wasatch Front, with new condos, townhomes, single-family product, and walkable retail anchored by the Bingham Junction Trax station. Median values track close to the Salt Lake County average, and Murray’s central location means commuters can reach downtown Salt Lake, the south end of the valley, and the canyons all within fifteen minutes.
Beyond housing, Murray is one of the most economically anchored cities in the state. Intermountain Medical Center — the flagship hospital of the Intermountain Healthcare system — is one of the largest employers in Utah, drawing thousands of medical professionals and supporting an extensive medical office and biotech corridor. Fashion Place Mall, Murray Town Center, and the State Street commercial spine anchor retail. Major employers including Intermountain Healthcare, FranklinCovey, and dozens of professional services firms make Murray one of the most jobs-dense cities in the valley relative to its size. Murray Park, the historic Murray Theater, and the original 1903 city hall (still in use) anchor a downtown that hosts the popular Fun Days festival every July. With Trax light rail, FrontRunner access, I-15 and I-215 connectivity, and central-valley positioning, Murray is one of the most logistically advantaged cities on the entire Wasatch Front.
