Payson sits at the southern edge of Utah County, where the Wasatch Front opens to Mount Nebo and the southern Utah landscape begins. Settled in 1850 by Mormon pioneers near the mouth of Peteetneet Creek and originally known as Peteetneet for the Ute chief who lived in the area, the city was renamed for early settler James Pace and incorporated in 1853 as one of the oldest cities in the state. Payson’s deep agricultural heritage — particularly its onion farming, celebrated annually at the long-running Onion Days festival every Labor Day weekend — still defines the city’s identity even as modern growth has expanded its boundaries dramatically. Today the population is approaching 23,000 with active development continuing year over year.

Maple Lake, Big East, and the surrounding Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest provide year-round outdoor access. The Payson Temple, dedicated in 2015, anchors the east bench and has become a major regional landmark. The Peteetneet Academy and the historic downtown anchor the cultural scene. Schools fall under the Nebo School District, with Payson High serving the area as a long-running community institution.
