Salt Lake County’s newest city — an east-bench community of tree-lined streets, walkable neighborhoods, and a brand-new downtown built around Millcreek Common, all minutes from Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Millcreek is the newest city in Salt Lake County, incorporated in December 2016 from a long-established township that had grown organically along the eastern edge of the Salt Lake Valley. The boundaries stretch from Salt Lake City to the north, Holladay to the south, and the Wasatch foothills to the east, with neighborhoods that include some of the most coveted residential areas in the entire valley. Despite its young city government, Millcreek’s neighborhoods are anything but new — many were established in the early- and mid-20th century, and the mature trees, brick bungalows, and walkable grid layouts give the city a settled, established character that newer Wasatch Front communities work decades to develop.
The Millcreek real estate market is one of the most varied and competitive on the east side. The 33rd South / 27th South / Highland Drive corridor offers iconic mid-century modern and Craftsman homes that have become some of the most sought-after architectural inventory in Utah — original wood floors, tile bathrooms, and lot sizes you simply cannot find in newer construction. East Millcreek climbs the bench toward Mount Olympus with view properties and custom homes commanding premium prices. Closer to I-215 and the Olympus Hills area, established 1960s and 70s family homes offer accessible price points relative to neighboring Holladay and Cottonwood Heights. The brand-new Millcreek Common downtown, opened in 2022, has added a true urban core: ice ribbon, restaurants, shops, and the Millcreek City Hall — transforming the formerly nondescript 33rd South / Highland Drive intersection into one of the most active walkable centers in the valley.
Beyond housing, Millcreek’s location is its defining advantage. Big Cottonwood Canyon — with Solitude and Brighton ski resorts — is a fifteen-minute drive. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail, Wasatch Boulevard, and Mount Olympus trailhead are minutes away. Skyline High School (Granite School District) is one of the most academically respected high schools in the state, and Skyline’s reach into the most established Millcreek neighborhoods drives a steady relocation pipeline. The Salt Lake Valley’s central east-side commercial corridors — Holladay’s Highland Drive, Sugar House’s 21st South, and the Murray-area State Street — are all within a few minutes’ drive, making Millcreek one of the most convenient and well-connected residential communities in Salt Lake County.
