Magna sits at the western edge of the Salt Lake Valley, pressed against the eastern slope of the Oquirrh Mountains and bordered by the Great Salt Lake to the north, West Valley City to the east, and Kearns to the south. Founded in the early 1900s as a company town for the Garfield Smelter and the massive Kennecott Copper operations in nearby Bingham Canyon, Magna’s identity has been tied to the mining industry for more than a century. The Kennecott Bingham Canyon Mine — one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world and a National Historic Landmark — remains a major regional employer, with the smelter and refinery on Magna’s western edge continuing to anchor the city’s industrial heritage. Today Magna is a metro township within Salt Lake County (under Utah’s metro township structure), with a population approaching 28,000 and a strong, working-class community character that’s largely preserved its small-town identity.
