About Kearns

Kearns sits on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley, bordered by West Valley City to the north, Taylorsville to the east, West Jordan to the south, and Magna to the west. Originally established in 1942 as Camp Kearns — a major U.S. Army Air Forces training base during World War II that housed nearly 90,000 soldiers at its peak — the area transitioned into civilian use after the war and became one of the first large suburban communities to develop on Salt Lake County’s west side. Today Kearns is a metro township within Salt Lake County (governed under the unique Utah township structure rather than as an incorporated city), with a population approaching 38,000 and a strong, working-class residential character that’s defined the community for decades.

The Kearns real estate market is one of the most accessible in central Salt Lake County. Established neighborhoods built through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s offer well-maintained post-war family homes — many on full lots with mature landscaping — at price points significantly below the east bench or central valley. Newer infill development continues throughout the township, particularly along the 5400 South and 4700 South commercial corridors and in pockets of redevelopment near the Utah Olympic Oval and the Bangerter Highway corridor. The facility is one of the most active competitive sports venues in the Mountain West and a major regional draw. The Oquirrh Park Fitness Center, the Kearns Library, and the long-running Kearns High School (Granite School District) anchor the community’s civic life.
