The seat of Tooele County and anchor of the Tooele Valley — a historic mining and military community west of the Oquirrh Mountains, now one of the fastest-growing residential markets within commuting range of the Salt Lake Valley.
Tooele sits in the Tooele Valley west of Salt Lake County, separated from the Salt Lake metro by the Oquirrh Mountains and connected via I-80 over Stansbury Crossing or SR-201 through the Kennecott corridor. Settled in 1849 by Mormon pioneers and named for the tule reeds growing in nearby marshlands, Tooele has been the seat of Tooele County for over 170 years and the commercial and government anchor of one of the largest counties in Utah by area. The city’s deep heritage includes mining, smelting, and railroading roles in the Bingham Canyon copper operations, and a long-running military presence at the Tooele Army Depot — both shaping the city’s identity through the 20th century. Today Tooele is rapidly evolving from that working-class historical base into one of the fastest-growing residential markets within commuting range of the Salt Lake metro.
The Tooele real estate market has changed dramatically over the past decade. Established neighborhoods around Main Street, the historic Tooele County Courthouse, and the original pioneer grid offer character homes — many over a century old — on tree-lined streets with mature landscaping and pricing well below comparable Salt Lake County properties. The Overlake area on the city’s eastern flank has become the primary growth corridor, with master-planned communities offering modern floor plans, neighborhood amenities, and Stansbury Park-area views back toward the Oquirrhs. Newer construction continues throughout the Tooele Valley, with Stansbury Park (just north of Tooele proper) and Erda providing additional growth inventory. Tooele’s value equation — significantly lower price points than Salt Lake County, larger lot sizes, and a 30-to-45-minute commute to Salt Lake City via I-80 — has driven steady population growth as buyers priced out of the central valley look west.
Beyond housing, Tooele has built a distinctive recreational and economic profile. The Bonneville Salt Flats — the famous land speed racing venue — are an hour west on I-80. The Stansbury Mountains and Deseret Peak Wilderness provide some of the most accessible high-mountain hiking and recreation in the state. Miller Motorsports Park (now Utah Motorsports Campus) is one of the largest motorsports venues in the West. The Tooele Army Depot remains a major regional employer, and the rapidly expanding distribution and logistics corridor along I-80 has added thousands of jobs in the past decade. Schools fall under the Tooele County School District, with Tooele High and Stansbury High serving the area as community institutions. With direct I-80 access, the new Mid-Valley Highway under construction, and ongoing master-planned residential growth, Tooele represents one of the most active growth markets on the western edge of the Wasatch Front.
